McCain's Speech
Well, let’s go through this in stream-of-thought.I should mention that I lean pretty far left, so if you have some insight, leave it in the comments and be polite about it. I’ll do the same.
A long video montage constantly hammering on his experience as a POW. I respect him, especially as a fellow soldier. I understand his ordeal, but how is this going to fix the country?
How can you be a POW and then treat our captured enemy combatants as we do in Guantanamo?
It’s been ten minutes. STILL POW talk. “When you’ve lived in a box…”
He’s on stage now and doing his usual pointing and thumbs up thing. (Why does he do this every time he takes the stage? Testing out his memory, seeing how many people he can recognize? Heh.)
One attendee is wearing a Vets aginst McCain shirt and holding signs that say “You can’t win an occupation,” and “McCain Votes Against Vets.” I’m surprised he isn’t being swept away.
McCain is thanking friends and family. I appreciate his remark to Senator Obama, saying that being fellow Americans is what matters most. It’s nice, but really, let’s get over this fluff and start talking about what, exactly, you’re going to do to fix this, Senator.
Someone just got escorted away, being rowdy, I’m not sure what I missed.
McCain talks about Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK) Listing her experiences. Same old rhetoric.
McCain says he’ll veto any porkbarrel spending and point out who put it there. He’ll expose this sort of useless spending. I’d like to see this as an itemized list for each and every earmark if this is the case, and see if he’s ever put anything like that on some other unrelated bill.
Highlighting his vote for the troop surge. Thanking Gen. David Petraeus and the troops.
“We lost their trust when we valued our power over our principles.”Hmmm. Seems as if this is still the case, no?
Dependence on foreign oil? How about we work to become less dependent on oil altogether? Drilling offshore or in the ANWR isn’t the solution to the oil crisis.
Cutting taxes? Great. I can buy a new pair of shoes. Where are you going to get the money to fund a war that has cost billions upon billions already? AND you want to pay for education and retraining of the jobless? You think that’s free?
You want schools to compete between each other? A novel concept to try and flush out the bad teachers, but this means that a good teacher will want and deserve better pay and/or benefits. Where is this money going to come from?
Drilling offshore beginning immediately. Nuclear power. Clean Coal. Solar, Wind, FlexFuel. Great. This doesn’t happen overnight. He says it’s impossible to achieve energy independence without drilling. I say is’t not.
Of course, “I have the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not.” Geez. Hanoi sucked, yes, now move on.
OH MY GOSH ENOUGH! If we wanted to hear about your POW experience, we’d pick up your book at the book store. Now let’s talk about the issues instead of drawing ovations for your war stories.
Lots of warm-fuzzies and ideaologies, but no solutions.
“Stand up and fight.”
Darn right I will. I’ll fight to make sure that your moving van doesn’t ever pull up to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
